Data Panel Customization
What is Data Panel Customization?
The data panel is what users see when they click into a specific record like an Order, Quote, or Customer. It's the detailed view where your team inputs information, reviews order specifics, and takes action. Data Panel Customization lets you control exactly which fields appear in this view, how they're organized, and who sees what. You can create separate layouts for internal users (your team) versus external users (customers, carriers, partners), ensuring everyone sees relevant information without the clutter of fields that don't apply to them.
This matters because not every field is relevant to every user. Your dispatchers might need to see equipment specifications and driver availability, while your customers only care about pickup times and delivery windows. Data Panel Customization eliminates unnecessary information, surfaces the fields that matter most for each audience, and creates cleaner, more focused workflows that help people work faster.
How Data Panel Customization works:
- Access Object Builder: Navigate to Settings, then Object Builder. Select the object whose data panel you want to customize (Orders, Customers, Partners, etc.).
- Choose Internal or External panel: You'll see tabs for "Internal Data Panel" and "External Data Panel." The internal panel is what your team sees. The external panel is what outside parties see when you share records with them.
- Rearrange field sections: Click and drag sections to reorder them. Put the most critical information at the top where users see it first. For example, move "Pickup & Delivery Details" above "Billing Information" if your dispatchers prioritize scheduling over invoicing.
- Show or hide specific fields: Toggle fields on or off for each panel. You might show internal fields like "Driver Pay Rate" only to your team while hiding them from external views. Conversely, show customers their PO number and delivery appointment while hiding internal dispatch notes.
- Rename section headers: Edit section names to match your terminology. Change "Commodity Details" to "Freight Description" if that's how your team talks. Clear labels help users find information faster.
- Add custom fields to panels: Any custom fields you've created in Object Builder automatically become available in data panel customization. Position them in logical sections alongside related default fields.
- Test both views: Click into an actual record to preview how the internal panel looks. Then generate a share link or log in as an external user to verify the external panel displays correctly with only the intended fields visible.
- Save layout changes: Once you save, all future records of that object type will use your customized panel layout. Existing records immediately reflect the new structure.
What it means for you:
Your team stops wasting time scrolling through irrelevant fields to find the information they need. A customized data panel presents exactly the right fields in exactly the right order for each user type. Dispatchers open an order and immediately see driver assignments, equipment needs, and appointment windows without digging through customer contact details or billing terms. Customer service reps view customer records with contact information and order history front and center, while financial details remain in the background where they belong.
For external users, a clean data panel builds professionalism and trust. When you share an order with a customer, they see a streamlined view focused on what matters to them: shipment status, expected delivery, and relevant documentation. They're not confused by internal fields or overwhelmed by information they can't act on. The result is faster communication, fewer phone calls asking for clarification, and a better overall experience with your operation.
